Men’s health and how to talk about it!

Raise awareness of men’s health issues.

The charity helping to raise awareness of men’s health in the UK is Movember  and they’re doing a great job! Each November more and more men of all ages take part in raising money by growing a moustache. Well, for all you ladies out there, we definitely can rule this out!  However, we can add our voices to the conversation through talking to our fathers, brothers, sons, nephews and husbands. Why not have e a chat about how they feel about their lives, the direction it is going in and the everyday pressures they may be under

Talk to men about their mental health.

Most of you will know someone in your network of family and friends who have suffered from mental health issues. However, for men, their silence on this issue and the problems they may well encounter can literally be a matter of life and death. According to the Movember Charity, globally, every minute, a man dies by suicide. In the UK, 75% of suicides are men. With suicide rates in the UK rising and 1 in 8 men suffering from mental health problems, it is a matter of urgency to prevent this from happening. We can make a start right here, by opening up the conversation on these issues with the men in our lives. Let’s get talking to our husbands, sons, fathers, uncles and nephews!

Talk. Ask. Listen. Encourage action and Check-In.

You can all talk to the men in your life and ask them how they are doing. For instance, ask them how they feel, or just listen, Encourage them to find a solution to whatever pressures they are under. It is up to us to check-in on them so they realise asking how they are doing is the norm. Knowing that they’re not alone can be hugely effective. If you or concerned about someone please contact the Samaritans on 116 123. The calls are free,

A word from Zac Goldsmith, MP for Richmond upon Thames

“Congratulations to Marta on taking on this important challenge. Mental health is a growing problem across the country and among all age groups. But the statistics on mental health in the male population are truly shocking.”
